The Vanns
Not many Australian bands have had the type of ascent as The VANNS have.
Cutting their teeth on the Australian live circuit since 2015, the South Coast rock group were able to find their identity during a heady period of time for the genre. Emerging as modern Australian rock music blended effortlessly with a new wave of young indie bands hungry to make their mark, The VANNS proved themselves early as leaders of the pack.
And through it, their profile and career trajectory has matched the band’s tenacity and constant passion for creative evolution.
The release of The VANNS’ debut album Through The Walls in 2019 marked an arrival of something fresh and new in Australian music. In Jimmy Vann (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Cameron Little’s (lead guitar, vocals, keys) core partnership, there exists a natural brand of storytelling that has endeared itself to thousands around the country. Bolstered by the crucial musical input and influence of Tom Switlek (bass, backing vocals) and Andrew “Banjo” Banovich (drums, vocals), The VANNS have an impenetrable musical dynamic, born out of a shared love for live performance energy.
Through The Walls saw this thrive – a culmination of those previous four years spent finding themselves as a band on the road, filtering those life experiences into studio sessions under the guidance of producer Oscar Dawson (HOLY HOLY).
The release of the album struck a chord with fans and industry alike, scoring The VANNS a lucrative triple j Feature Album placement, as well as the delivery of an impactful Like A Version cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Hey Ma’, which has over five million streams alone. The music of the record arrived feeling stadium-ready; an energy that The VANNS would continue to take into subsequent tours, where sold out shows across the country would await.
To look at The VANNS more recent tour history, the longevity and continued love for the four-piece is no more evident than it is now. Supporting artists such as The Kooks, The Wombats, and Catfish & The Bottlemen on some of the largest stages of their career; taking their music international in 2022 to The Great Escape in the UK, and enjoying sold out headline shows at venues like Sydney’s Metro Theatre and The Forum in Melbourne — the latter of which was recorded for triple j’s Live At The Wireless series, The VANNS have proven that their drive has not waned or diminished.
Refusing to rest on their laurels of success to date, The VANNS’ focus is on their next chapter — their second album, Last Of Your Kind. Debuting a fresh and rejuvenated sound in 2023 with the release of singles ‘Making It Out Alive’, ‘Ever’ and ‘Haunted’ (which charted as the #1 most played song on triple j upon release), The VANNS’ next moves are already showing themselves to be their most exciting yet.
